The Weekly Edit: Ski Season Isn’t Sold Out. Yet.

SNOW SEASON IS NEARLY HERE

Winter is just around the corner and, if ski is on your radar, now is the time to get it locked in.

Christmas and New Year are already looking busy, February half-term never hangs around for long, and some of the best rooms, suites and private chalets are beginning to disappear. The really good stuff always goes first, especially in the resorts and hotels everyone wants year after year.

Whether you’re planning a big family ski week, a long weekend in the mountains or something a little more glamorous with long lunches, brilliant après and a beautiful hotel at the end of the day, now is the moment to start putting plans in place.

So, where are we sending everyone this winter?

THE SKI SHORTLIST

COURCHEVEL

The crown jewel of the Alps.

Courchevel is one of those ski destinations that just gets everything right. Brilliant skiing, beautiful hotels, seriously good restaurants and enough going on off the slopes that it works just as well for non-skiers, younger children and teenagers too.

You can spend the morning skiing some of the best runs in the Three Valleys, stop for a long mountain lunch, head back for spa time or hot chocolate, then somehow still find the energy for après, dinner and a little bit of shopping in 1850.

It is glamorous, yes, but it is also incredibly easy for families. Great ski schools, private instructors, kids’ clubs, tobogganing, swimming pools, bowling, spas and endless places to eat means everyone has something to look forward to, even if skiing is not their entire personality.

VAL D'ISERE

Another firm favourite.

Val d’Isère has that brilliant mix of serious skiing and a really fun village atmosphere. The ski area is huge, the snow is incredibly reliable and there is enough variety to keep everyone happy, from confident skiers looking for big days on the mountain to families who want great ski schools and easy access to the slopes.

There is also so much going on beyond the skiing. Long lunches on the mountain, après at La Folie Douce, spa afternoons, shopping in the village, swimming, sledging and plenty of brilliant restaurants for when the ski boots finally come off.

It is lively, stylish and very easy to love, which is probably why so many of our clients go once and then immediately start planning the next trip.

MÉRIBEL

A classic for a reason.

Méribel sits right in the heart of the Three Valleys, which means you have some of the best skiing in the Alps quite literally on your doorstep. It is perfect for families and mixed-ability groups because everyone can ski at their own pace, then meet back up for lunch without the logistics becoming a military operation.

The village itself feels a little softer and more relaxed than Courchevel, with beautiful chalet-style hotels, cosy restaurants and a really easy atmosphere. There is plenty going on off the slopes too, from spas and swimming to ice skating, sledging and long lunches that somehow turn into après.

For us, Méribel is one of those destinations that just works. Great skiing, great food, lovely hotels and easy access across the whole Three Valleys ski area.

It is polished without feeling too flashy, family-friendly without feeling sleepy, and one of those places people tend to come back to year after year.

MEGÈVE

Cosy and chic.

Megève has a completely different feel to some of the bigger ski resorts. It is prettier, more relaxed and much more about the whole experience than simply skiing from first lift to last. Think cobbled streets, horse-drawn carriages, beautiful boutiques, brilliant restaurants and a village that still feels like a proper place rather than just a ski base.

The skiing is fantastic for families and intermediate skiers, with wide runs, lovely tree-lined pistes and plenty of mountain restaurants for long lunches in the sun. And when you are done for the day, there is so much more to do, from spas and shopping to ice skating, sleigh rides and very good après.

Megève is elegant, easy and effortlessly stylish. Perfect for families, couples or anyone who wants their ski trip to feel just as good off the mountain as it does on it.

ST MORTIZ

The grande dame of the Alps.

St Moritz has always had a certain magic to it. It is glamorous, polished and steeped in history, but underneath all of that there is also genuinely brilliant skiing, beautiful scenery and a huge amount to do away from the slopes.

Days can be spent skiing across the Engadin, stopping for long lunches with incredible mountain views, then heading back into town for shopping, spa time or drinks somewhere suitably fabulous. And if skiing is not the main event, there is still plenty going on, from ice skating and horse-drawn carriage rides to winter hiking, polo and the famous frozen lake.

St Moritz is definitely one for those who like their ski trips with a little extra glamour. Beautiful, iconic and wonderfully old-school in all the right ways.
